How to Set It Up

Prerequisites: You need a Zendesk account with API access enabled. Generate an API token from Admin Center → Apps and Integrations → Zendesk API.

1. Install the package

npx mcp-zendesk
Running via `npx` requires no global install; the package is fetched and executed on demand.

**2. Configure Claude Desktop**

Add the server to your `claude_desktop_config.json` (typically at `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json` on macOS):

3. Configure Claude Code

Add the same block to .claude/mcp.json in your project root, or use the Claude Code CLI:

Then set the required environment variables in your shell or .env before starting Claude Code.

4. Verify the connection

Restart Claude Desktop or reload Claude Code and ask a test question such as “List my 5 most recent open Zendesk tickets.” If credentials are correct, results should appear inline.

Works Best With

This server is verified compatible with both Claude Desktop and Claude Code. Claude Desktop is suited for support agents who want conversational ticket access without writing code. Claude Code is a better fit for developers building automated support workflows or running batch analytics against Zendesk data.

Known Limitations

Authentication required: All three environment variables (ZENDESK_SUBDOMAIN, ZENDESK_EMAIL, ZENDESK_API_TOKEN) must be set correctly. The server will not start or will return auth errors without them.
Zendesk API rate limits apply: Zendesk enforces rate limits that vary by plan (typically 700 requests/minute on most paid tiers). Heavy analytics queries or bulk ticket fetches can hit these limits.
Read-oriented by default: Verify in the GitHub repo whether write operations (ticket creation, status updates) are implemented — support automation use cases that require mutations may need additional tooling.
No real-time webhooks: The server pulls data on demand; it does not listen for Zendesk webhook events or push updates to Claude proactively.
Sandbox vs. production: Test against a Zendesk sandbox subdomain before pointing at production to avoid accidental data exposure in Claude’s context window.
